The Coral Reef Foundation and Reef Renewal USA are scrambling to protect their brood, moving corals to land-based facilities and deeper-water nurseries.
The strategy is twofold: move smaller corals to safety and leave the biggest ones in the water, hoping they'll spawn in August. These larger corals, up to 45 inches across, are the most vulnerable, and their survival is crucial for the reef's future. The restoration groups are also planning to scoop up the coral spawn and bring it into cooler waters, hoping to grow them into full-fledged corals for replanting.
The 2023 bleaching event taught these groups valuable lessons, and they are better prepared this year. Despite significant losses, the Coral Reef Foundation saved over 17,000 coral colonies across 23 species. However, the question remains: can they save enough to make a difference?
